About the Job

Southeast Asian woman. Warm, spirited, sharp-witted, and deeply rooted in tradition. Ah-Ma is Zara's beloved grandmother and cultural guide, introducing her granddaughter to the rich history, food, and traditions of Southeast Asia. A natural storyteller with a mischievous sense of humor, she teaches through experience rather than instruction, often expecting Zara to learn by observing, tasting, and participating rather than following recipes or rules. Though loving and nurturing, Ah-Ma can be impatient, stubborn, and delightfully opinionated. She moves through life with confidence, carrying generations of knowledge in her hands, her cooking, and her memories. Beneath her playful exterior is a profound desire to preserve her family's cultural heritage and pass it on to the next generation. In the play, Ah-Ma serves as both mentor and memory, appearing in flashbacks and imagined conversations that help Zara reconnect with her roots. The role requires strong comedic instincts, emotional depth, and the ability to balance humor, wisdom, and tenderness. Performer should be comfortable incorporating light Manglish/Singlish rhythms and bringing authenticity to a character whose love is expressed through food, family, and tradition. Character Traits: Warm, funny, stubborn, energetic, nurturing, culturally proud, intuitive, wise, and deeply loving.
